Providing enough green energy to heat up to 12,500 homes

The proposed biogas facility will use locally generated chicken manure and other agri-food organic wastes to produce green gas in the form of biomethane, which can be injected into the existing gas network to replace fossil fuel natural gas - providing enough green gas to heat up to 12,500 homes. The facility will also produce natural sustainable fertilisers that can be used in place of synthetic fertilisers, helping local farmers to protect the environment and promote sustainable agriculture.

The estimated £115 million proposed development is a significant investment into Lincolnshire helping the region achieve net zero targets as well as supporting the sustainability ambitions of the important agri-food sector within the county.

Reasons to support green energy and this project

  • Creating a renewable source of green energy from local organic waste.

  • Tackling climate emergency by saving the release of up to 61,000 tonnes of climate damaging CO2 every year – equivalent to removing 13,000 cars from the road and worth up to £4.4 million per annum to the UK economy.

  • Supporting the future viability of Lincolnshire’s important and highly regarded agri-food sector, allowing food producers to make net zero products using sustainable fertilisers and renewable green energy.

  • Enhancing energy security by providing a more secure, reliable and affordable source of green energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuel gas imported from Russia and elsewhere.

  • Enhancing food security through a more resilient and productive decarbonised agriculture sector.

  • Creating a circular economy hub by recycling nutrients and green energy to local farmers and industry. Production of c.100,000 tonnes of sustainable fertilisers per annum, providing significant greenhouse gas emissions reductions and avoiding the import of up to £2.9 million of synthetic fertilisers.

  • Delivery of considerable environmental and ecological benefits through reducing harmful emissions to air and water, as well as introduction of significant biodiversity net gain through planting of over 1,300 trees.

  • Creating new income streams for the countryside and provide an economic boost for rural communities and the local agriculture sector, while helping to sustain the long-term viability of 75,000 jobs in Lincolnshire’s agri-food sector.

  • Capital investment in the local economy of c.£115 million (c.£35 million of which will be spent locally), as well as generating £1.6million per annum in business rates which can be directed back into local community and services.

  • Generating an annual expenditure of c.£3-4m when operational, most of which will be recycled in the local economy, e.g. payments to farmers and procurement of local services including haulage and maintenance contractors, professional support services etc.

  • Generating up to 240 jobs during construction and over 100 jobs when the plant is operational.

  • Supporting identified local community initiatives, schools, sports clubs, charities and other neighbour schemes in the surrounding area with an annual community benefit fund of up to £20,000 per annum.
